New 'zero tolerance' border enforcement policy

  • Sessions says policy may split parents, kids

"Thompson's remarks come on the heels of an announcement from Attorney General Jeff SessionsJefferson (Jeff) Beauregard SessionsWhite House steps up efforts to confirm Central Intelligence Agency director Sentencing reform is moving in the wrong direction We should oppose Gina Haspel's Central Intelligence Agency nomination because of her torture record MORE to increase prosecutions of parents crossing the border illegally, which would result in the separation of parents and their children".

In one recent example of how the policy works, a woman who is suspected by the Justice Department of being part of the migrant caravan that was caught in a group north of the border was charged with illegal entry to the USA and separated from the four young children who were with her. Flores v. Reno, a 1985 class action lawsuit, dictated that children and minors must be kept in the "least restrictive setting" available, which typically meant they would be released from custody along with their mother.

Sessions also spoke about tougher immigration enforcement, with his visit coming a week after the caravan, with fewer than 200 migrants, arrived at the US border in Tijuana following a roughly monthlong trek through Mexico. But Sessions's latest announcement-in addition to plans he announced on Wednesday to address the roughly 150 migrants seeking asylum at the border-has dramatically altered expectations.

He pledged to send more immigration judges to the border to resolve cases if needed.

We will put you in jail.

The DHS official told the newspaper that families that are seeking asylum and properly present themselves at border crossings can remain together while they undergo the process of seeking protection.

"In this administration, we know whose side we are on", Sessions said Monday.

"These trends are clear; these trends must end", Sessions said, adding that "11 million people are here already illegally". "We're on the side of law and order".

"This is not business as usual", he continued.
