France slams Trump for remarks on guns and Paris attacks

  • Donald Trump has described an unnamed London hospital as a'war zone, with'blood all over the floors because of knife crimes

Trump went on to say things might have been different if Parisians in the cafes under attack had been armed.

France top officials slammed the United States president after his claims that the Bataclan carnage and other 2015 terrorist attacks could have been avoided if the country had looser gun ownership laws.

"If one employee, or just one patron had a gun, or if one person in this room had been there with gun, aimed at the opposite direction, the terrorists would have fled or been shot", Trump said.

"France expresses its firm disapproval of President Trump's comments about the Paris attacks on Nov 13, 2015, and demands that the memory of the victims be respected", the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Former French president Francois Hollande and ex-prime minister Manuel Valls, who were in power at the time of the 2015 attacks, also expressed their outrage in separate statements.

Trump's presidential campaign was supported by the National Rifle Association, a pro-gun rights organization which was the organiser for the convention at which the U.S. President was speaking.

But Londoners hit back at the president's comments, with Professor Karim Brohi, a trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, which trump is believed to have been referring to, suggesting it was absurd to think that guns could help solve knife crime.

However, the French foreign ministry made clear its rejection of Mr Trump's allegations.

That marks Paris's strongest criticism of the USA president since his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron took office a year ago.

The comments from Trump came the week after President Emmanuel Macron visited Washington as guest of honour for a state visit which saw both the leaders eager to stress their friendship.

"They say it's as bad as a military war zone hospital ... knives, knives, knives, knives", he added, making stabbing gestures.

'Nobody has guns in Paris, nobody, and we all remember more than 130 people, plus tremendous numbers of people that were horribly, horribly wounded.

Trauma surgeons in London, meanwhile, said Mr Trump had missed the point after, in the same speech, he linked knife crime there to an absence of guns.

London suffered a spike in knife crime early this year and saw more murders during February and March than NY.

"Gunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more hard to fix", he added. "We are proud of our world-leading service and to serve the people of London", he added in a statement. Trump pointed his hand as if it were a gun while describing how each of the victims in Paris was fatally shot.
