Cambridge Analytica announced Tuesday that it would cease operations and declare bankruptcy in the United States and United Kingdom after losing customers because of the revelation.

Cambridge Analytica also hired an outside lawyer to investigate the allegations. As Wired reports, one source says the employees in the company's NY offices were told to pack up and leave immediately without being offered information on how they'll be compensated moving forward. After assembling for meetings, employees were told to turn over their identification cards and any company property and to go home.

The company is facing a crisis of public trust after a developer gave personal information on millions of Facebook users to Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that worked on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. It has been doing this by offering a number of explanations on how it collects and uses data.

And the contact address given for Rebekah Mercer is the same location as Cambridge Analytica's NY operation.

Considering the changing public perception of data privacy and the financial value their data has for firms like Facebook, a premium version may be something many more users would consider at this moment in time.

The two women are daughters of the hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, who is reported to have been one of Cambridge Analytica's major investors. Cambridge Analytica says it bought the data from another company that was contractually required to comply with data protection rules and that none of the Facebook data was used in the Trump campaign.

The businesses issued a statement on Wednesday, saying they had started bankruptcy proceedings, blaming a "siege of media coverage" related to the Facebook data-harvesting scandal for the decision.

The market research comes as Facebook has come under fire recently for allowing users' private data to be shared with Cambridge Analytica, a political research firm.

Beyond the attorney general's inquiries, the question of what role the government can or should take to get social media companies to better protect personal information clearly hasn't been settled, Sims said.

Citing official documents, the media claimed that a firm named "Emerdata" was set up past year with the same registered address and the same directors of the Cambridge Analytical. Dr Alexander Taylor, acting CEO of Cambridge Analytica, was appointed a director of Emerdata on March 28.

Alexander Nix, the ex-chief of Cambridge Analytica, and Julian Wheatland were listed as directors of Emerdata but also as directors of some of the wider SCL Group of companies.
