Defensive tackle Akeem Spence has been acquired by Miami from the Detroit Lions for a late-round draft pick in 2019.

The move comes just over a year after the Lions signed the six-foot-one, 307-pound Spence to a three-year deal for $9 million.

In exchange for Spence, the Lions will receive an undisclosed 2019 draft pick.

But with a schematic change on the horizon under first-year coach Matt Patricia, Spence, a true 4-3 defensive tackle, became a solid player without a clear role.

The Dolphins swung the deal announced Thursday to plug a hole created when they released five-time Pro Bowl tackle Ndamukong Suh for salary cap reasons.

The Miami Dolphins have addressed perhaps their biggest need following the 2018 draft.

The Dolphins also have 2015 second-round pick Jordan Phillips and 2017 draft picks Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor, who went in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.

Spence has played 72 games with 41 starts during a five-year National Football League career that spanned four seasons with Tampa Bay (2013-16) and one with Detroit (2017).
