Falcons QB Matt Ryan agrees to 5-year, $150 million extension

  • Falcons reportedly make Matt Ryan highest-paid player in NFL history

While the terms of the contract haven't been officially announced, ESPN is reporting Ryan will receive $100 million guaranteed and will be the NFL's first $30 million a year quarterback.

Franklin signed a $36.5-million, five-year free-agent contract with the Chargers in March 2015, but got only two years out of it. Franklin, 30, played his first four National Football League seasons with the Denver Broncos, during which he started Super Bowl XLVIII.

On Thursday, Matt Ryan just inked a deal that well exceeds Stafford's. As soon as Aaron Rodgers inks a new deal with the Packers, Ryan will probably lose that title. Five more years will carry Ryan to the age of 38.

But that's likely a sports-radio debate for 2019, since the Falcons have already invested significant resources to the club's No. 1 tailback (Devonta Freeman-NFL's highest-paid running back, in terms of total payout) and potential No. 3 back on the roster (rookie Ito Smith, a fourth-round pick with insane stats from his time at Southern Miss). They have made six playoff appearances, reaching the NFC championship game during the 2012 season.

Need proof? Here's a look back at just some of the more memorable milestones and moments during Ryan's first 10 years.

Ryan has thrown for 41,796 yards during his career with 260 yards and 126 interceptions while completing almost 65 percent of his passes, holding the franchise record in almost every major career passing category. The Falcons quarterback set the mark after completing 22 of 29 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-7 win over the Cowboys on November 12, 2017. The changes, if ratified by the owners when they meet later this month in Atlanta, would take effect during the upcoming 2018 season. And he turns 33 years old in two weeks.

Ryan is a four-time Pro Bowler. One more win will also give Ryan 100 career wins, regular and postseason combined. It was hardly a surprise, but the numbers are still gaudy nonetheless. The quarterback market, after all, dictates timing sets the price more than value relative to other quarterbacks.
