His parents fought doctors and judges for months to take him to the United States for radical treatment because the condition left him unable to move.

"My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30", Evans, 21, wrote in a Facebook post decorated with a broken heart and crying emojis. "Thank you everyone for all your support", she wrote.

The judge said he accepted medical evidence which showed that further treatment was futile.

Doctors had removed Alfie's life-support following a High Court judge's ruling on Monday but he continued to live. The boy continued to breathe on his own, but his parents and their supporters anxious the decision would end his life.

The underlying theme in all of this, that Alfie's parents are prevented from even choosing their own child's treatment plan while he is dying, is nothing short of state cruelty.

"The Alfie Evans case is extremely hard for all involved; heartbreaking for his parents and emotionally challenging for the doctors and nurses involved in treating and caring for him", it said.

Alfie's parents have been backed by Pope Francis and Poland's President Andrzej Duda. "Today I pray especially for his parents, as God the Father receives him in his tender embrace". Senator Bernie Sanders, for example, spent his campaign decrying the American medical care system for denying care to poor Americans because of an inability to pay but has failed to speak on Alfie being denied medical care due to the British government. His parents fought over the legal battle for months to take him to a hospital in Italy so he could be kept on life support.

Tom added that their lives had been "turned upside down" by the "intense focus" his case had received. He thanked the hospital staff "at every level for their dignity and professionalism during what must be an incredibly hard time for them too".

Following Alder Hey hospital receiving abuse from the public, Alfie's father called on the public to go back to their everyday lives as he and his family took the time to grieve the loss of their baby son.

We invite you to share condolences for Alfie Evans in our Guest Book.

'This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected'.

The case drew the attention of Pope Francis, who offered to fly the child to Rome and care for him at a hospital in the Vatican. Francis recently appealed for the wishes of the boy's parents to be heeded, saying only God can decide who dies.
