The National Association of General Practitioners welcomed the call for re-tests, saying "it is extremely important that this is available for any patient who is anxious and wants to have repeat test for reassurance".

She added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the doctors, nurses and programme staff of Cervical Check for their continued hard work and commitment towards delivering a first-class service for the women of Ireland".

She was responding to comments by CervicalCheck clinical director Dr Grainne Flannelly, who said she could not be sure all of the women have yet been told about their reports.

Professor Gráinne Flannelly, the clinical director of the Cervical Check programme, has announced she is standing down from her role. I have chose to step aside to allow the Programme to continue it's important work'.

Her resignation comes after it was revealed that 206 women were wrongly diagnosed following routine smear tests.

The HSE said treating clinicians were informed about these findings and were asked to communicate with their patients directly where clinically appropriate.

The Health Service Executive demanded specific and detailed proof that Vicky Phelan had suffered any loss, inconvenience or harm as a result of the botched handling of her misread smear test, according to court documents seen by RTÉ's This Week programme.

The HSE said the worldwide peer review, agreed with Minister Simon Harris during this week, will determine any learnings and opportunities for improvement within the CervicalCheck Programme.

"The HSE also said it was "considered essential" that the remaining members of CervicalCheck's leadership team remained in situ" while a peer review is carried out.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has now established a review of the process, to establish how the scandal was allowed to unfold.

Earlier on Saturday, Mr Harris's Department of Health confirmed that it had advised CervicalCheck to arrange for additional smear tests for women whose Global Positioning System say they need them - at the cost of the State.

A portion of the monies will be paid into court and be held for the couple's two children who are now aged seven and 12.
