Freeman is the sixth OR running back in program history selected in the first three rounds of the draft, joining LaMichael James (2013 - 2nd Round), Jonathan Stewart (2008 - 1st Round), Maurice Morris (2002 - 2nd Round), Reuben Droughns (2000 - 3rd Round) and Curt Mecham (1942 - 2nd Round).

Many reject the wisdom of selecting a running back in the first round these days, and players like Freeman are a big part of that.

With AP Photos. The Denver Broncos began addressing their offensive upgrade by selecting SMU wide receiver Courtland Sutton in the second round of the National Football League draft.

Head Coach Vance Joseph and his staff coached Yiadom at the Senior Bowl - but they never had much interaction with him otherwise.

"I knew I was going to be able to dominate at the position if I bought into what they were trying to get me to do, " Sutton told the Denver media in a conference call.

The first two selections give the Broncos young weapons to surround new starting quarterback Case Keenum while complementing veterans such as receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Anderson's release created a huge hole at running back that left only two running backs on the Broncos' roster: Devontae Booker and De'Angelo Henderson.

One reason why Sutton is raw is because he was mostly recruited as a safety, and wound up switching to receiver early in college.

"That is really what we're excited about because I think it's contagious", Elway said Friday.

After a medical redshirt in 2014, Sutton caught 194 passes for 3,193 yards and 31 touchdowns in three seasons at SMU. "He has those traits". So how will Sutton fit in with Thomas and Sanders?

Pro Football Focus described Sutton as a guy who can be productive in the the red zone and win on 50/50 jump balls.

"He fits in flawless, " Joseph said.

Sutton's childhood team, the Dallas Cowboys, were interested in the local receiver but did not move up 10 spots to pick him. "It's more the concept and more about your offense".
