Microsoft Tops March-Quarter Views On Cloud Computing Strength

The technology giant reported revenue of 26.8 billion dollars (£19.2 billion), a 16% increase on the same quarter previous year. Analysts had expected earnings of 85 cents per share.

The company's shares were initially little changed in extended trading following the report, then jumped as much as 4% after the company gave a bullish outlook for fiscal 2019 on a call with analysts. He revealed that Sea Of Thieves "drove gameplay" across Microsoft Windows and Xbox One up to 10 million hours of viewership including a platform like Mixer. "For the next three to five years, the story for Microsoft is moving their existing base to some sort of cloud product".

In terms of guidance, analysts are expecting Microsoft to forecast $28.01 billion in revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter, according to Thomson Reuters. Microsoft is now a strong No. 2, behind Amazon, in this market for the foundation layer of cloud technology.

Microsoft's chief financial officer Amy Hood said the company had beaten expectations for the quarter. The company's Intelligent Cloud group, which includes server, and enterprise products and services, reported revenues that were up 17% to $7.9 billion.


Microsoft's Office 365, an online-productivity service for businesses, is also expected to continue to propel growth at the old-guard tech titan.

The company reported $3.5 billion in capital expenditures, its highest level yet and up 66 percent year over year.

At Intelligent Cloud, revenues climbed 17 percent to United States dollars 7.9 billion.

Finally, More Personal Computing accounted for $9.9 billion in revenue, a 13% (11% CC) increase YoY.

The company's flagship cloud product Azure, which competes with Amazon.com Inc's dominant cloud infrastructure offering Amazon Web Services (AWS), recorded revenue growth of 93 percent in the third quarter ended 31 March.
