Students in Santa Maria marched to remember those who died in the Columbine shooting while demanding more for gun legislation and mental health help on campuses.

Friday's Phoenix March for Our Lives group protest is being held on the anniversary of the 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Students also used the rally to focus on getting people registered to vote, because they said that is where the real change begins. A large number of state troopers were also on hand.

No students at Plano High School or Yorkville High School participated in the walkout event.

The National School Walkout was founded by four high school students in CT and takes place on April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

It follows a surge of youth activism following the February 14 shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

∫ Students at Broadalbin-Perth Central School District, student had the option to wear orange in support to end school violence.

Zach Worden, a 17-year-old junior, said the students were advocating for tougher gun laws.

"I would like students to know political activism is a lot easier to participate in than they think it would be and it makes a difference as long as you voice your opinion", she said. "They did not choose to be born into a country where, every single day, they're afraid to go to school". "My friends are teachers at Columbine High School, my sister was at Columbine High School".

"We want to disrupt the day to show that we are not safe in schools, and we want to send a message to our North Carolina representatives to push for common sense gun control", said East Chapel Hill High senior Talia Pomp.

"We were like what should we do should we still try and then we're like let's just do it at lunch because they can't stop us".

"There was a young lady in Chicago shot at the age of 15 and at her funeral everyone wore orange, and orange is the color hunters wear to not get shot", Attleson said.
