FAA, EASA Order Emergency Checks On CFM56-7B Engines

  • WATCH Engine on Southwest plane forced to make emergency landing popular among jets

In August 2016 a Southwest flight made a safe emergency landing in Florida after a fan blade separated from the same type of engine and debris ripped a hole above the left wing.

CNN reported Saturday that that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency ordered a full ultrasonic review of certain CFM56-7B engines in the next day 20 days.

The agency says its order affects 352 engines in the USA and another 681 worldwide on "new generation" Boeing 737 jets.

Authorities say nearly 700 Boeing 737 engines will need to be checked worldwide over the next 20 days.

"The unsafe condition", the FAA said in the inspection directive, "is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same design". She said Southwest had already inspected half of the blades identified in the engine maker's notice before Tuesday's accident.

Southwest Airlines sought more time previous year to inspect jet-engine fan blades like the one that snapped off during one of its flights Tuesday in an accident that left a passenger dead. Airlines including Southwest say they have begun inspections anyway.

A Southwest Airlines plane flying from NY to Dallas had to make an emergency landing Tuesday morning in Philadelphia after one of its engines was damaged, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

A passenger was partially sucked out of the aircraft as hull damage caused decompression. Fellow passengers pulled the woman back in and attempted to revive her.

It is not clear how many takeoff-and-landing cycles the engine in Tuesday's accident had gone through and whether it would have been covered by the FAA directive.

CFM, which is jointly owned by General Electric and France's Safran, produces the CFM56 engine in factories in the United States and Europe. National Transportation Safety Board investigators have said the fan blade that broke showed signs of metal fatigue, including microscopic cracks.

The FAA's report went on to describe TIMET's cleaning procedure that introduced phosphorous into its titanium in amounts significantly greater than the amounts of other producers.

The Boeing 737 used on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 had a fault in one of its CFM56-7B engines.

The FAA had proposed inspections last August and was going through the complicated rule-making process to get an order in place.
