Gennady Golovkin trolls Canelo Alvarez in new commercial; Mexican reacts

  • Gennady Golovkin to fight Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May in Los Angeles

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez was suspended for six months Wednesday in a unanimous vote by the Nevada State Athletic Commission stemming from two failed drug tests in February, but we already know when he will get back to boxing.

Following the news that Canelo tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, twice, it was understood his May 5th rematch with Golovkin would be punted down the line.

Golovkin called him a liar and implied he had always been a doper and accused him even further, stating he was doping during their first bout as well.

After pulling out of the fight against unified world champion Golovkin, Alvarez insisted he was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

In a statement, Alvarez's promoters, Golden Boy Promotions said they accepted the sanction and indicated they aimed to reschedule the Golovkin rematch for September.

It added that "Canelo looks forward to returning to the ring in September for Mexican Independence Day weekend to represent Mexico and boxing in what will be the sport's biggest event of the year".

The two middleweight megastars were due to collide in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo, eight months on from a first meeting that ended in a controversial draw.

"Although most professional sports, global anti-doping agencies and United States boxing commissions treat meat contamination differently from other positive tests, Nevada does not".

The IBF have urged Golovkin to fight mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko but instead he has arranged to take on 36-3-1 fighter Martirosyan.

The suspension is back-dated to February 17, the date of Alvarez's first positive test.

But with that fight likely to go on pay-per-view in America, they would not want to clash with Alvarez against Golovkin which would be a big sell on HBO PPV. We all would rather be getting ready for the fight with Canelo, but there is nothing we could do about that.

"I am truly shocked about what has happened and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity". I have a lot of Mexican fans.
