Russian Lawmakers Propose Sweeping Ban on US Imports in Retaliation for Sanctions

  • War between Russia, US can't be ruled out: Moscow

Earlier in Washington DC, President Trump went on to blame "Russia's failure" to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons for the recent attack in Douma and the retaliatory attack by the U.S. and its allies that followed.

The UN chief spoke by phone Wednesday with the ambassadors from the five permanent council members - Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States - to express his "deep concern" about the deadlock over Syria.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis warned such an attack carried the risk of spinning out of control, suggesting caution ahead of a decision on how to respond to an attack against civilians last weekend that US officials are increasingly certain involved the use of banned chemical weapons.

Douma and the sprawling eastern Ghouta region near the capital, Damascus, had been under rebel control since 2012 and was a thorn in the side of Assad's government, threatening his seat of power with missiles and potential advances for years. Russian Federation threatened to shoot down any US missiles launched at targets in Syria. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!' You shouldn't be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!"

The Syrian government, Iran, and Russian Federation have vocally denied involvement in Saturday's attack, and accused rebels in Douma of fabricating the chemical assault, describing the manoeuvres as "propaganda" and a "hoax" to sabotage the deal to end fighting in Douma and evacuate civilians as well as Jaish Al-Islam rebels and their families.

The military action is a response to an apparent chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people earlier this month.

Over the weekend, Mr. Trump blamed Syrian President Bashar Assad and his worldwide allies, including Russian President Vladmir Putin for the apparent attack that left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

Dunford said the USA did not coordinate targets with or notify the Russian government of the strikes, beyond normal airspace "de-confliction" communications.

The White House said the president had not laid down a specific timetable for when military strikes may take place.

The New York Times reports Syrian planes have been taken to a Russian base near Latakia on the country's coast, and that some Russian personnel and equipment have also been moved.

"On a strategic level, it's how do we keep this from escalating out of control, if you get my drift on that", he said.

A spokesman for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said the experts will begin work tomorrow.

Moscow's ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, warned on Wednesday that any USA missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and the launch sites targeted. Putin and Macron instructed their foreign and defense ministers to maintain close contact to "de-escalate the situation", the Kremlin said.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the global situation is fast becoming critical. "It would provoke a retaliation operation by government forces and the White Helmets were to use it to stage a provocation with an alleged use of chemical weapons", he said. The Kremlin readout said that Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe".

Russian Federation has described the reports of the chemical attack as a "provocation" created to justify Western intervention against its ally, and accused militant rebels of fabricating it.

China has urged the US not to take military action against Assad and says he must be given the opportunity to explain.

Russia's UN ambassador said yesterday that the priority in Syria was to avert US-led military strikes that could lead to a risky war between Russian Federation and the United States.

Even small acts could lead to "a lot of other developments that aren't at all needed, either by us or our European neighbors, and can only gratify those who are protected by an ocean", he told a news conference.

Simultaneously, France's Leader Emmanuel Macron was quoted stating he has in his possession "proof" that "Syrian authorities targeted private citizens inside Douma using chemical substance weapons" recently.
