  • LIVE UPDATES | 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony

The most unexpected source of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drama this year came from various Dire Straits members, with half of the chaps ultimately choosing to avoid the ceremony for inexplicable reasons.

Wow, what a beginning.

The evening performances included tributes to musicians who died in 2017, with the Killers performing Tom Petty's "American Girl" and "Free Falling" and Ann Wilson of Heart and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains paying tribute to Soundgarden's Chris Cornell with the artist's 1994 hit "Black Hole Sun".

The Killers play in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Cleveland. "Jann is in charge, but I don't know why".

Bon Jovi, Howard said, "have worked their asses off". Hill earned a standing ovation from the audience.

"I've been writing this speech since I first strummed a broom and sang at the top of the stairs of my childhood home", he said. "It took a lot of people to get us here tonight".

After years of being snubbed by the Hall, Bon Jovi was inducted this year via a fan voting process where music aficionados could vote for them via an online ballot.

"Finally, it's the end of my speech", Bon Jovi said. Out of your seats", before the group performed classic tracks including "You Give Love A Bad Name", "It's My Life", "Livin" On A Prayer', and relatively new track "When We Were Us'. Each of the members spoke onstage, giving thanks for the honor and telling old stories about the New Jersey band. Without any sort of presenter, they humbly accepted their award and apologized for the absence of frontman Mark Knopfler, whom bassist John Illsley said couldn't attend because of "personal reasons". Instead, bassist John Illsley, alongside keyboardists Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher, inducted themselves into the Rock Hall. "I'm honored to induct Sister Rosetta Tharpe into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame", Howard yelled following a video package featuring past interviews from Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin and others praising Tharpe's musicality. "It was a pleasure to go on this journey with him". Although it rained during the ceremony, not even a single fan left the arena.

"It's been long overdue".

Orr died in 2000, but each of the band members acknowledged his impact, with lead singer Ric Ocasek saying "it feels unusual being up here without him". "It feels unusual to be up here without him", Ocasek said, who noted he lived in Cleveland for a while.

R&B-infused progressive rockers the Moody Blues took the stage to perform "Your Wildest Dreams", while New Wave pop songwriters the Cars played "Just What I Needed".

After an "In memoriam" montage of those who passed in the a year ago, Heart's Anne Wilson and Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell delivered a tribute to Chris Cornell.

Tharpe died in 1973 and was a pioneering guitarist who performed gospel music. He then mentioned former WMMS disc jockey Kid Leo and The Agora.

Mary J. Blige gave an incredible speech in Simone's honor.

The taped ceremony will air May 5 on HBO.

The frontman said though he and the other current members haven't spoken to Sambora since he left the group, he invites the performer, along with Such, to be part of the Rock Hall festivities.

Dire Straits, led by Mark Knopfler, emerged from Britain's so-called pub rock scene of the 1970s, which emphasized blues roots and no-frills musicianship in an era of angry punks and flamboyant glam bands.
