VW Group hopes the new management system will streamline the company, quickening the decision-making process.

Mueller's replacement with VW brand chief Diess follows slow progress in reorganizing the group's auto brands, a key pillar of "Strategy 2025" to transform the Germany's biggest vehicle company into a leader in cleaner cars and to move on from its diesel emissions scandal of 2015.

Volkswagen said in a short statement that board of directors Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch was in discussions with top managers about their duties and that the result of the talks was "currently open". "For that, he is due to the thanks of the entire company".

"We will emphatically address the special challenges that lie ahead of us, especially in electromobility, digitisation and new mobility services", he told a press conference at the group's Wolfsburg headquarters.

He assumes control from Matthias Mueller, who was designated in 2015 at the stature of the diesel emanations outrage.

VW also said works council executive Gunnar Kilian would replace Karlheinz Blessing as human resources chief. Herbert Diess, current brand boss of Volkswagen, has been announced as his successor.

Longtime chief executive Winterkorn quit days after the firm admitted to installing software in 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide created to cheat regulatory emissions tests in a scandal that became known as "dieselgate".

Mueller, 64, has already steered the mammoth carmaker into a massive restructuring, aiming to offer electric versions of many of its models and slim down its operations over the coming decade.

Shares in Volkswagen climbed 1.7% to ß176.06 (R2 603) in late morning trade in Frankfurt, vastly outperforming the Dax index of leading shares that was up just 0.1%.

Muller, formerly the CEO of Porsche, took the helm of the group in the aftermath of the diesel scandal in 2015, in which the company had been found to be installing "defeat devices" in their cars to cheat emissions tests. He was made head of production planning at the Volkswagen brand in 2009 and became the member of the executive board for production and logistics at Porsche in 2013.

The carmaker remains mired in legal woes overseas and in its home market, where it also faces possible diesel bans in some smog-clogged inner cities, a prospect that has already depressed resale prices to the chagrin of millions of owners of diesel vehicles. Diess will be responsible for Group development and research and will also take on additional Group management roles alongside heading the Vehicle IT.

Described as highly ambitious, Diess has earned a reputation as a fierce cost cutter unafraid of pushing through big changes.
