  • Mark Zuckerberg Regulation ‘inevitable for social media firms

David Fraser, a Halifax privacy lawyer, isn't convinced that the narrative is accurate.

We know what kind of regulation we need. If somebody takes digital information, under the Criminal Code it's not theft ...

Facebook has regularly been accused of listening in on conversations using microphones on smartphones and then presenting ads related to recent conversations to its users.

Such profiling is unsafe because it completely exceeds individual control.

It's not much of a stretch to say they probably aren't equipped to decide how Facebook treats it's user's privacy.

Facebook is withdrawing its opposition to the California Consumer Privacy Act, the company confirmed earlier this week, with the move being welcomed by a number of privacy advocacy groups in the state. He said the company "limits the amount of data" it collects and uses. If I post a photo on Facebook, I can choose whether it's visible to the public or to my friends or to a subset, a list of friends. Better management of what Creative Strategies defines as "toxic content" would, apparently, also help. And there is the information that Facebook uses to make money and for advertising purposes. Is the value you get equal to the benefit that Facebook gets?

The emails appear to contradict the duo's claim on the "Mornings on the Mall" radio show on Wednesday that Facebook had not tried to contact them. Later, Sen. Roy Blunt (R., Mo.) waxed nostalgic about how his were the first Senate business cards printed with a Facebook address, and how today his young son was already dedicated to Instagram, another Facebook-owned platform. On top of regular accounts, many users created what is called a "finsta", or "fake Instagram". I'm interested in Facebook regulating itself and solving the problems. Congress wants to get it right, even if they don't totally understand. One of the things that brought a fair amount of attention lately is that someone downloaded their records and discovered text messages and phone call records. "I think the company was appreciative that I was raising awareness about it, but they ultimately didn't make enough changes to close the vulnerabilities, which would have prevented Cambridge Analytica from happening".

Clearly, Facebook's not too big to accept orders, and it's not too big to pivot when needed. "There was a movie about this - or it said it was about this - it was of unclear truth".

Clear explanation of terms of use for third-party apps: While seeking permissions from users for third-party apps, the terms of use, how and what data would be collected, where and how it will be used, with whom the data will be shared should be made transparent.

Whilst being grilled by Senator Orrin Hatch, Zuckerberg was asked whether Facebook would always be free.

GETTYWill Facebook launch a new paid-for service? The main man himself also revealed that he wasn't immune to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, as his data was vacuumed like everyone else. The company's chief security officer, Alex Stamos, took to Twitter to complain that Facebook and other "platforms" were being held to a double standard concerning the profiles, since they may well "have been criticized as monopolists for locking them down".
