Thousands of Palestinians staged a mass protest along Gaza's sealed border with Israel on Friday, some burning Israeli flags while Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and live bullets, killing one and wounding hundreds, from across the border fence.

Gaza health officials say at the very least eight Palestinians are wounded in Friday's protest, the 3rd of that climb two weeks.

Since the protests began on March 30, 34 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces firing live ammunition, tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at the demonstrators on the other side of the border.

The Israeli army reported that there were several attempts to breach the border, Israel's Reshet Bet radio reported and that protesters threw bottles and in one case an explosive device.

In northern Gaza, an enormous Israeli flag was burned that had earlier been set on the underside for protesters to walk over.

Gaza health officials said Islam Herzallah, 28, was shot by Israeli troops east of Gaza City and transported to a hospital where he died, adding 528 people were hurt, including 122 by Israeli live fire, in the third large-scale protest in as many consecutive Fridays.

Footage distributed by the military showed an area of the fence made up of several layers of barbed wire coils.

Hundreds flocked to one of 5 teams near Gaza town, stepping on a big flag.

The protests, planned to last six weeks, are calling for Palestinian refugees to be allowed to return to their former homes that are now inside Israel - which Israelis say essentially amounts to calling for the country's destruction.

The debate over Israel's open-fire regulations has intensified with a rising number of dead and wounded since the first protests on March 30.

In the northern Gaza Strip, Sumaya Abu Awad, 36, attended the protest with her three daughters and son.

"I am from the village of Hiribya and it is my correct to return to it", she talked about, referring to a village north of Gaza destroyed throughout the 1948 battle surrounding Israel's creation. "I am not afraid of death because there is no life in Gaza".

Many protesters left for midday prayers but larger numbers are expected to gather in five spots along the border on Friday afternoon.

Palestinians are still streaming to tent camps along Gaza's border with Israel for its third of what are to function as mass protests before mid-May.

Palestinians say protesters are being shot while posing no threat to soldiers, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union have called for an independent investigation.

Rights groups have strongly criticised Israeli forces whereas pointing to unverified motion pictures which have unfold on-line of Gazans displaying to be shot, along with one seeming to point a Palestinian targeted as he ran away from the fence whereas holding a tyre. The move from Tel Aviv has angered Palestinians who regard the eastern sector of Jerusalem - which Israel annexed - as the capital of a future Palestine state.

Organisers also again said they want the protest to be peaceful this week, but it is unclear to what extent they or even Hamas remain in control.

That is the day Palestinians will mark the 70th anniversary of the "Nakba" or "Catastrophe", when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced amid violence culminating in war between newly created Israel and its Arab neighbors in May 1948.

Gaza has been beneath an Israeli blockade for higher than 10 years, whereas its border with Egypt has moreover been largely closed in current occasions. However, Egypt opened the border on Thursday and it is due to stay open over the weekend.
