Baby born four years after parents' death

On December 9, 2017, four years after his biological parents had died in a auto crash, a baby boy was born by surrogacy in Guangzhou.

The baby boy's parents, Shen Jie and Liu Xi, had been married for two years before trying IVF treatment to conceive. Days before doctors were set to transfer one of the embryos into Liu, the couple died in a vehicle crash in Jiangsu.

For the next three years, the parents of the couple fought a legal battle to be allowed use of the embryo. Liu's mother gave him the name Tiantian, or "sweet".

The legal battle was lenthy due to there being no precedent as to whether the four grandparents were entitled to inherit their children's fertilized eggs, Chinese media noted at the time.

The birth of boy nicknamed "Tiantian" (sweet in Mandarin) was made all the more hard as China does not have a legal precedent for the parents of couples inheriting their children's embryos.

The four grandparents-in-waiting eventually chose to enlist the services of a surrogacy agency in Laos, where it is legal.

Although he has no parents, his four grandparents have reportedly proven relations through DNA. During her pregnancy, the surrogate mother travelled to Guangzhou, China, on a tourist visa.

Dr Ding Lijun, from the hospital that originally held the embryos, told China Daily that although hospital authorities were sympathetic to the families involved, they were cautious about handing embryos to individuals.

When the child was born, the grandparents were also required to take paternity tests to prove they were, in fact, Tiantian's relatives, but the extraordinary effort was worth it.

"The eyes are like my daughter, but still a little more like his father", the baby's maternal grandmother, Hu Xingxian, told the Beijing News.

He said: "The boy is destined to be sad on his arrival into the world". Shen Xinan, Tiantian's parental grandfather said. We will definitely tell him in the future.
