  • “Despicable!” Melbourne woman who faked cancer jailed for scamming $40K

The court heard that her parents, who run a farm near Swan Hill in Victoria's north-west, had received thousands of dollars from their friends as they were struggling financially.

A 24-YEAR-OLD Australian woman has been jailed for three months for conning donations from family and friends after faking illness.

Court documents reveal Dickenson told her parents she was ill with leiomyosarcoma receiving treatments at the prestigious Peter McCallum Institute in Melbourne, and the Epworth Hospital as well.

Police eventually charged Dickenson with obtaining property by deception. Instead, Dickenson's lifestyle of drugs, alcohol and trips to Thailand and Europe exposed her plea for money as a scam.

"People's conscious desire to assist has been touched. that's the social trust". Another person gave money on four separate occasions.

The presiding magistrate David Starvaggi said Dickenson's conduct "tears at the very strings of human nature" and described it as "despicable". "These are people who worked hard and dug into their own pockets", he said.

The 24-year-old was sentenced to three months in jail and an additional 12-month community corrections order, which will require her to do 150 hours of community work and also undergo treatment for mental health issues and substance abuse.

But her truth was soon uncovered when one of her donors saw her party photos on Facebook, which made him question her claims.

An Australian celebrity blogger, Belle Gibson, was fined around $318,000 in 2017, after falsely claiming to have beaten brain cancer.

However Mr Starvaggi said the cases were not directly comparable, and that the court needed to deter others from engaging in similar conduct.
