Vettel victory overshadowed as Ferrari mechanic breaks leg in pit lane accident

Sebastian Vettel took a dramatic victory in Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix as Ferrari made a bold one-stop strategy work to fend off charging Mercedes Formula 1 drivers Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages. The race appeared to be going to script when Vettel pitted from the lead on lap 18 for soft tyres, but as it transpired he stayed on that same set of tyres for 39 laps.

Here are the best pictures of the action from the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Vettel was nearly overtaken by Bottas on the last lap but made a crucial blocking move and won by only 0.6 seconds for his 49th career win.

He had earlier told his team that everything was under control but that, he recognised later with a smile, was not at all the reality. I tried to make it as clean as possible.

Vettel held on to finish just 0.699s ahead of Bottas while Hamilton battled back from ninth place to complete the podium.

Raikkonen was given the green light to exit the box, but the back left tyre had not been removed.

This follows the €5,000 ($6,100) penalty the team received Friday after Raikkonen left a pit stop during practice without one of his wheels being properly attached.

Kimi Raikkonen has given his version of events following a botched Ferrari pit stop that left a mechanic hospitalised.

Hamilton could take some consolation in equalling Raikkonen's all-time record of 27 successive points finishes. "I started ninth so third isn't bad at all". Daniel Ricciardo, starting from fourth and already in top form this season, retired with a mechanical fault after one lap.

However, engineers had not finished changing the rear left tyre of his vehicle.

Raikkonen added: "I don't know what shape he is in".

"I had struggled a bit with the rears in the first stint".

That represented a stunning turnaround for Honda, Toro Rosso's engine partners after three nightmare years at McLaren. He did catch up to Hulkenberg's Renault but was unable to pass the German driver.

Esteban Ocon opened Force India's account for 2018 with a hard-fought world championship point in 10th.

Sauber claimed its first points for nearly one year after an excellent strategic play by its pit wall, one-stopping Marcus Ericsson to lift him into the top 10.
