Indian people helping to rescue injured after a private school bus falls into a deep gorge in Nurpur, Kangra district, on April 9, 2018.

According to her, all the dead children were aged under 10 years. The bus, owned by the Ram Singh Memorial Public School, was carrying 40-45 people.

Eyewitnesses said the driver, a 65-year-old army veteran, lost control on a sharp curve and the vehicle fell into the 200-feet deep gorge at Cheli village, some 300 km from the state capital Shimla. Meanwhile, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Kishan Kapoor, along with MLA Rakesh Pathania and Deputy Commissioner Kangra Sandeep Kumar reached the spot to supervise rescue and relief operations.

The state government announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for families of the victims.


It is not clear what caused the accident to take place and local authorities have ordered an investigation into the crash.

At least 13 seriously injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Pathankot where one of them succumbed to injuries, an official said.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among those mourned the deaths.

"My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident", he said in a tweet. Police, local volunteers, team of doctors and other emergency services have been mobilized, he added.
