Time and again his party had alleged irregularities in the deal for buying 36 Rafale fighter jets off-the-shelf from France, signed between the Indian and French governments.

Replying on Amit Shah's comment Rahul Gandhi said, "They call entire opposition animals, see according to Amit Shah and the basic vision of the BJP RSS - there are only two non-animals in this country. We don't understand, and even the government, that what is the extent of the hole in the financial system", Gandhi said.

To a question about the coalition in Uttar Pradesh, Mr Gandhi said when the three parties (Samajwadi party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress) come together, "BJP will win only two seats, that too with luck.

It is a disrespectful statement", Rahul told reporters during the fifth round of his visit to poll-bound Karnataka.

Talking about the recent coalition between the state parties, he said, "where BJP going to win seats?. Besides (state-run enterprises like) HAL, ISRO, BEL, BEML and ITI, it has best academic and research institutions like IISc and IIM, which attracted global IT firms and multinationals", said Gandhi, who earlier in the day, interacted with workers of the city civic corporation, women entrepreneurs and top executives of India Inc here.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday tore into the Modi government, describing the GST (goods and services tax) as the most complex tax structure, comparable "only to those in Pakistan and Sudan", and promised a compassionate, single-slab tax regime when the Congress comes to power in the next elections.

The basic thing is how to get the country out of the "mess that Mr Modi and RSS has put it in", he said. "Everybody can see that, you can hear it in his speeches", he said.

He was on the sixth leg of campaigning as part of the "Janashirvada Yatra" ahead of the May 12 polls in Karnataka. He said that India will have to pay hugely due to PM Modi's landmark November 8 demonetisation decision. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, who is also in charge of party affairs in Karnataka, state Congress president G Parameshwara and Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Gowda.
