Guardiola set to come up short again in Champions League

  • Pep Guardiola and his team get a hostile reception on the streets of Liverpool

Inevitably, the goals that drew United level both came from Paul Pogba - a day after City manager Pep Guardiola claimed he was offered the chance to sign the Frenchman in the January transfer window.

Man City still lead the Premier League by 13 points, but their path to the title is not all plain sailing, as their next six games include Spurs, and five teams battling for survival at the bottom of the table.

"If that's so I will have to recognise that I'm not good enough or the way we want to play [means we are] not able to do that - but I don't think so because of what we've done this season".

Three first-half goals in Merseyside left the English Premier League's runaway leaders reeling and although they regained their composure in the second half, their failure to score an away goal could prove to be decisive.

"We will try to pick ourselves up for Liverpool, we are professionals".

Following the final whistle, Guardiola talked about how one has to remain consistent when playing the top sides, as well as expressing concern that this defeat might affect their confidence going forward.

"We have to be better and more focused on set-pieces", Guardiola told Sky Sports .

The Red Devils second-half comeback stunned the home support into complete silence as a much-changed City starting XI were punished for the lack of incisiveness, after dominating the first-half of the game holding a 2-0 lead at the break.

"This kind of defence: dominant, not too deep, being in the right area of the pitch so if we win the ball there is a big opportunity for us to use the space they have to leave open", he said.

Midfielder Fernandinho said: "Two defeats in a row is something we hadn't experienced before".

"We see what happens". The weather is very complicated, but from the beginning of the game we knew that they would be pressing strongly.

"We are close to being champions", he said in his press conference on Friday. You have to defend a little better in the second half, but it is football but. It would be good if you try to understand, that we played good football. I remember my Munich team being 0-0 against Barcelona after 77 minutes - but we ended up losing 3-0.
