At least half of the world's people is now unable to obtain essential health services.

"Universal Health Coverage is a powerful equalizer that ensures health for all, enhances health security, reduces poverty and promotes gender equality".

Olawepo noted that Nigeria presently allocate only about 3-6 per cent of the national budget to the health sector, adding that the allocation was grossly inadequate.

World Health Day is a global health awareness day which is celebrated under the sponsorship of World Health Organisation (WHO). The day was first marked in 1949.

This year's theme "Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Everyone, Everywhere" means ensuring that everyone no matter where they live or who they are can access essential quality health services without facing financial hardship.

"Health facilities should be well equipped and staffed with quality and highly skilled personnel that can manage hard situations, know the right of patients and as well respect such rights". This year's slogan, #HealthForAll, aims to ensure that all people can get quality health services so as to attain better health.

"Ultimately, universal health coverage is a political choice".

The presence of community health workers known as Health Surveillance Assistants (HSA) is also a clear indication that Malawi is indeed in support of the universal health coverage.

Why this year's theme of Universal Health Coverage so important?

UHC is key to people's and nations' health and well-being. "Their inclusion is of paramount importance to rights-based health systems and global health security".

The UN General Assembly on Dec 12 in 2012 adopted a resolution emphasising health as a critical element in worldwide development. People were also apprised about the various health programmes and services being provided by the department.
