Texas Republican Farenthold Quits Congress Amid Sex-Harassment Probe

  • BREAKING Rep. Blake Farenthold Resigns From Congress

Farenthold announced in December that he would not seek re-election to office.

He said in a statement Friday that he had sent a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Republican, resigning his seat effective 5 p.m. Friday.

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) on Friday evening announced his resignation from Congress. According to Greene, another co-worker had said Farenthold said he had "sexual fantasies" and "wet dreams" about her and had told Greene that he was "estranged from his wife and had not had sex with her in years". The announcement came after news reports that $84,000 in taxpayer money was used to settle a sexual harassment charge against him in 2014.

It was reported in December that Farenthold used 84,000 USA dollars from taxpayers to settle the sexual harassment claim, which he has publicly promised to repay.

In a video statement regarding his resignation Farenthold made no mention of the lawsuit, but said he had planned to finish out his term. Redistricting before the 2012 cycle made the once-competitive district much redder, and Farenthold hadn't faced a serious re-election threat since.

Farenthold served the 27th Congressional District of Texas which represents people along the Gulf Coast of Texas and counties inland. I wish to thank my workers each in Washington and Texas for all of their exhausting work on behalf of our constituents. Michael Rekola worked as Farenthold's communications director in 2015, and in that time he said the congressman's sexual jokes and treatment of aides amounted to bullying that led him to treat medical and psychological help.

"Leaving my service in the House, I'm able to look back at the entirety of my career in public office and say that it was well worthwhile", Farenthold said.

"Congressman Farenthold's reported actions are as worrying as they are disgusting".

"I remain focused on the May 22nd run-off election".

The race for Farenthold's seat is already headed to a primary runoff.

Asked Friday about the status of his promise to repay taxpayers, an aide did not reply.
