An Indian court has sentenced Bollywood star Salman Khan to five years in jail for poaching a rare species of Indian antelope.

In 2013, the Rajasthan government filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the previous decision to acquit Khan, and by November 2016 the Supreme Court agreed to fast track the government's plea.

The court in Jodhpur found the actor guilty of illegally hunting the two blackbucks from his auto while filming "Hum Saath Saath Hain" in 1998.

He was sentenced to five years in jail and told to pay Rs 10,000 (55,400).

Salman Khan has been associated with two criminal cases.

He pleaded "not guilty" to the charge, and insisted the evidence presented against him was "false", according to The Hindu news website. Maximum punishment under Section 51 is six years.

Public prosecutors alleged that Khan, 52, and four other actors in the auto with him fled the scene when they were spotted, leaving the animals' carcasses behind. Salman was at the wheel when he spotted a herd of blackbucks, the Indian antelope, and shot and killed two of them, the prosecution said.

"We are studying the judgment - it just came as a surprise, as the entire investigation, and facts of this case were the same as those for which Salman has been acquitted by Hon'ble (Honorable) High Court of Rajasthan in two cases", he said.

While convicting Khan in the latest case, who flew in to Jodhpur in a private jet, Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri called him "a habitual offender".

Indian TV footage showed people cheering and applauding the court sentence. It is a very sad news for the film industry, his family and all those who know him.

This is his fourth stint in the Jodhpur Central Jail.

The actor known as "bhai", meaning "brother" in Hindi, enjoys a cult-like status with the majority of his devotees' young men who envy Khan for being unmarried at 52.

The son of Indian screenwriter Salim Khan, Salman Khan made his movie debut in 1988, and his career took off shortly after. At the time of announcing the order, Salman would have to be in a court.

Salman also infamously spent some time in a Mumbai jail for a hit and run in Bandra on September 28, 2002, when his white Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly crashed into the American Express Bakery at Hill Road at Bandra, killing one person and injuring four others.
