  • BREAKING: Shooter leaves four dead at university as cops rush to scene

A researcher on Thursday shot dead four colleagues and wounded three others at the Eskisehir Osmangazi University in northwestern Turkey, Turkish media reported.

Earlier, unconfirmed reports said three people were also injured.

The motive behind the attack now remains unknown.

Gonen said the assailant entered the university's education faculty with a gun and shot the four university staff members. A reporter for Anadolu, speaking on CNN Turk, said he had surrendered rather than trying to escape.

Police detained a suspect, identified as a research assistant working at the university's education department, following the shooting.

Turkey's intelligence agency has snatched at least 80 Turkish nationals wanted for their alleged links to the 2016 failed coup, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag has said. Television pictures showed people gathering outside the university's main entrance while many ambulances were sent to the area. However the city of Eskisehir, home to almost one million people, has not seen any attacks.

Turkey has suffered a string of deadly attacks blamed on Kurdish militants in recent years.
