Ohtani Blasts 3-Run HR in 1st AB at Home

  • A fan reaches for a ball hit for an inside-the-park home run by Cleveland Indians Edwin Encarnacion along with Los Angeles Angels left fielder Justin Upton during the second inning of a baseball game Monday

Shohei Ohtani hit his first major league home run in his first Angel Stadium at-bat to help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Cleveland Indians 13-2 on Tuesday night.

Ohtani added a line-drive single off Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis' glove in his second at-bat in the third inning before adding another single in the eighth inning.

Despite missing out on that extra RBI, the 23-year-old isn't likely to complain about the end result of his first plate appearance at home. He's slated to make his home pitching debut Sunday. The Angels had $2.315 million in global signing money to offer Ohtani.

After a terrible spring training that featured 10 strikeouts at the plate, Los Angeles Angels two-way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani is off to a hot start. Ohtani wasn't done, though, as he finished the game against the Indians with three hits in four at-bats, scoring twice and knocking in three runs, in a 13-2 Angels romp. But after his performance last night, we may not have to wait as long as we originally thought to see his full abilities as a two-way player on a near nightly basis. His two games last week made him the first player since Ruth in 1919 to start as a non-pitcher on Opening Day and then get a start on the mound within his team's first 10 contests.

The start also means Ohtani would not appear at designated hitter in the series opener.

The young phenom will continue to receive comparisons to Babe Ruth.

On Sunday, Anaheim Angels rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani picked up a win in his major league pitching debut in Oakland. After players broke character and jumped around Ohtani to celebrate, Mike Trout pointed to the field and instructed Ohtani to take a curtain call.
