  • Apple working on'touchless control curved iPhone screen

While we're still getting the hang of Apple's new gesture interface on the iPhone X, Apple is apparently working on an entirely new kind of phone with a touchless gesture-based input. These panels will curve inward gradually from top to bottom, and not down at the edges like Samsung's recent flagships.

Until now, every iPhone model released has featured a flat screen. Apple's latest iPhones have a feature called 3D Touch that responds differently depending on different finger pressures.

People familiar with Apple's plans told Bloomberg Technology Wednesday that the Cupertino giant is developing curved iPhone displays and a new type of technology that would make it possible for users to control an iPhone with touchless gestures. In addition to normal touch gestures, iOS could detect when you hover your finger over the screen to trigger some actions. Bloomberg also reiterates its belief that Apple's microLED display technology is three to five years away. Both are said to be in the early stages of research and development which suggests that they may not arrive for at least a couple of years.

The features could help Apple differentiate itself in a crowded market where phones generally look the same. To stay ahead, Apple needs compelling new features and designs. Although the iPhone does boast the best camera out of any smartphone, nearly all of their other features have been implemented and mastered by other manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and Sony.

The iPhone X, which was released past year. There's no reason why this would be implemented in today's report, but we may learn more as time progresses.
