The Baltimore Ravens announced Wednesday that they signed former No. 2 overall draft pick and NFL Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III to a one-year contract. Newsome also said Griffin's signing would not affect the team's plans to take a quarterback in the upcoming draft. Seeing as the Ravens former backup to starting quarterback Joe Flacco in Ryan Mallett has hit free agency, there was a spot to fill in case Flacco were to go down in 2017.

The Heisman Trophy victor remained a free agent after the Browns released him in March 2017, but his return to the league was announced by the Ravens on Wednesday. He signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday night.

The Ravens were in search of adding a No. 2 quarterback to compete with Woodrum.

Head Coach John Harbaugh told a press conference: 'I'm very excited about it, the coaches are excited about it. He went on to start 20 more games in Washington before Cousins took the reins.

"He had a real good workout and we were able to come to an agreement. He's a very talented quarterback who has had a lot of success in this league early on".

The former Heisman Trophy victor was regarded as one of the league's most electrifying prospects when Washington selected him with the second overall pick of the 2012 draft.

"We are always working, trying to make our roster as good as can be", Newsome said.

"So we're excited about it".

Griffin signed with the Browns in 2016, but was released from Cleveland after one season. I really feel that way. "I believe our players are going to love the fact that he's here; they like him as a person". I know RGIII - he'll speak to this - I felt like he really wanted to be here. It just felt like this was the place for him.

Baltimore represents the next best chance for Griffin to re-establish a once-bright career that has been lost at sea since 2014.
