Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 3 March he had agreed with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to speed up the delivery of S-400 air defence missile systems to Ankara, a purchase that has alarmed Turkey's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners.

Regarding the upcoming trilateral summit in the Turkish capital Ankara, the presidential aide said Turkish, Russian and Iranian leaders are expected to make a joint statement.

The Kremlin said that Putin and Erdogan would follow a groundbreaking ceremony for Turkey's first nuclear power plant via video conference.

The Akkuyu plant, comprising four reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, will be built by the Russian State Nuclear Energy Agency, Rosatom.

"We are also in close cooperation with Russian Federation to end as soon as possible the terror threat and clashes in Syria", said Erdogan.

"When the first reactor of the Akkuyu plant is put into operation in 2023, Turkey will join the family of nuclear energy producers", he added.

The Akkuyu NPP will produce 35 billion kilowatts of electricity at full capacity, which will meet about 10 percent of Turkey's electricity needs.

"As an important part of the project, the construction license process, which started almost three years ago, has been completed..."

"You can hear about new targets any time soon", said Erdogan at an opening ceremony in Istanbul. TWF's mission is to develop Turkey's strategic assets, to grow their value and thereby to provide funding for Turkey's priority investments.

Recalling that more than 200 Turkish students were studying in the nuclear energy field in Russian universities, Putin said the graduates were offered employment in the Akkuyu plant.

Since Russia was awarded the contract in 2010, the project has been beset by delays.

He said that the nuclear power plant's construction can be called the "birth" of the Turkish energy sector. The number of power plants under construction will be 56 with the Akkuyu NPP.

Speaking at a later news conference with Putin, Erdogan said the cost of the project may exceed the planned $20 billion for the 4,800 megawatt (MW) plant, part of Erdogan's "2023 vision" marking 100 years since the founding of modern Turkey and meant to reduce Turkey's dependence on energy imports.
