  • Malala Yousafzai returns to Pakistan Nobel laureate visits Swat Valley vows to continue fight for girls education

The trip comes two days after Malala, now a student at Oxford University in Britain, made her emotional return to Pakistan, where her surprise visit has been met with widespread joy and pride. The visit-on which she was accompanied by her father, mother, and two brothers-was kept tightly under wraps.

Yousafzai met with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi earlier in her surprise visit to Pakistan.

Youzafzai also said in her hometown that she had waited for the moment for more than five years and said she often looked at Pakistan on the map, hoping to return. Touching scenes were witnessed when the now-20-year-old university student left the hotel, thanking Pakistani officials for giving her an army helicopter over the weekend to fly to the Swat Valley, once virtually under the control of militants, and see her home in the northwest town of Mingora.

Mingora is where Malala's family was living and where she was attending school on October 9, 2012, when a gunman boarded her school bus, asked "Who is Malala?" and shot her.

Malala is now studying politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University in England while also working with the Malala Fund to continue the work she started nearly a decade ago in her small town in Pakistan. "I have the same right on the country as any other Pakistani has", Malala said during an interview.

Talking to private news channel, Malala had shared her plans about permanent returning back to Pakistan after completing her education.

In 2007, the militants had taken over the area, which Malala affectionately called "My Swat", and imposed a brutal, bloody rule.

Malala reiterated her joy of being in Pakistan and her mission of providing education to children.

Opponents were murdered, people were publicly flogged for supposed breaches of sharia law, women were banned from going to market, and girls were stopped from going to school. "We need to see what she has done until now, she has constructed a model school at Shangla reflecting her sincerity of purpose-to promote education especially among girls in the country".
