Pulse Nightclub Shooter's Widow Found Not Guilty of Aiding and Abetting

  • The Noor Salman trial wraps up this week

Salman faced charges of providing material support to a terrorist organization and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors said Salman and her husband scouted out potential targets together - including Disney World's shopping and entertainment complex - and she knew he was buying ammunition for his AR-15 in preparation for a jihadi attack. "This is a case where the more we learned, the better Noor Salman looked", said one of her attorneys. "She may not have known what day, or what location, but she knew".

"We're very sorry for the family members and friends of the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting, and also the survivors of that awful attack", said Susan Clary, Noor's family spokeswoman.

It took the jury 12 hours of deliberations before handing up the verdict. She said the gunman, Omar Mateen, showed her the Pulse website and told her, that's my target. Noor Salman is a mother, not a monster. It's a awful, random, senseless killing by a monster.

Defense attorneys described Salman as an easily manipulated woman with a low IQ.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Ricardo Enriquez testified that Salman said in several statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation that Mateen watched jihadi beheading videos, purchased a rifle and ammunition and went to a gun range to practice.

Indeed, the evidence, as The Intercept documented previously, is very clear that the first time Mateen ever went to Pulse was to attack it, after simply searching Google for "nightclubs downtown Orlando".

According to prosecutors, Mateen meant to attack Disney World's shopping and entertainment complex by hiding a gun in a stroller but became spooked by police and chose a new target. They said they were disappointed with the verdict but respect the decision.

"It was a hard case for all sides involved", said Judge Paul G. Byron of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

"I am disappointed in the outcome of the trail and know the victims and/or their families are more disappointed", Demings said. When she heard the verdict, the now 31-year-old Salman, began sobbing, as did relatives seated behind her.

Lawyers argued that Salman's statement, obtained after more than 11 hours of questioning without a lawyer present, amounted to a false confession.

This June will mark two years since the horrific terrorist attack/hate crime. To prosecutors, she was a willing accomplice who gave her husband a "green light" to carry out the attack.

Salman's attorneys argued that she was just a "simple-minded" victim.

Sweeney said Mateen's initial plan was to attack Disney Springs, a commercial district adjacent to Disney World. She went on to state that the awful act by Mateen "wasn't preplanned" because "if he didn't know, she couldn't know".

In the end, there was never any evidence that Salman or even Mateen ever "cased out" the nightclub ahead of the shooting; there was never any evidence that Salman should have been held without bond, away from her child, Susan Clary, Salman family spokesperson told reporters outside the courthouse.
