"I am leaving for Iraq, will be getting back mortal remains of the 39 Indians".

"The minister left around 1 pm from the Hindon airbase and is expected to return with the bodies tomorrow", an official said.

Also a former Army chief, Singh said that the families of the deceased have been informed about how the mortal remains would be handed over to them. "They won't have to come to the airport", the former Army chief had said. This is the same aircraft that was used to evacuate Indians from war-torn Yemen in 2015.

The director of the Amritsar worldwide airport, officials of the customs, immigration, Central Industrial Security Force, police, Indian Air Force officials and other members of the bureau of civil aviation held a meeting Sunday to ensure a smooth progress of the handing over of the bodies.

Of the 39 people killed, 27 were from Punjab, four from Himachal, two from West Bengal and the remaining from Bihar as DD news reported.

DNA testing by Martyrs Foundation established the identity of 38 Indians while there has been 70 per cent matching of the DNA for the 39th person, she had said.

"I will be flying straight to Amritsar followed by Patna and Kolkata", he said. The Punjab government has deputed Local Bodies minister Navjot Sidhu to receive the mortal remains at the airport.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced in Parliament recently that the 39 Indians kidnapped by the ISIS in 2014 in Mosul had been killed at Badoosh.
