Russia says it has tested a new nuclear missile

Missile defense is a notoriously unreliable business, and Russia's nuclear arsenal is nearly certainly already capable of surpassing or overwhelming USA missile defenses.

The heavy missile was test-dropped at the northern Plesetsk spaceport. It will replace the Soviet-era Satan missile, which is approaching the end of its service life. The RS-28 Sarmat is a super heavy, liquid-fueled ICBM capable of carrying multiple, independently targetable thermonuclear warheads and has been said capable of evading state-of-the-art defenses and destroying an area the size of Texas.

The liquid fuel, intercontinental missile known as "Sarmat" is the same one that Russian President Vladimir Putin said in March could reach anywhere in the world.

President Putin unveiled a suite of other weapons during his speech, including a supersonic weapon that can not be tracked by anti-missile systems.

Russia's military said this was the second time it has successfully test-launched a Sarmat.

A new video released by the Russia Ministry of Defense shows the test launch of a ballistic missile called "Satan 2", a test Russian officials say went "perfectly".

"It can attack any target, through the North or South Pole, it is a powerful weapon and no missile defence system will be able to withstand", he said. Putin's boasts also seemed targeted in large part at a domestic audience, shortly ahead of a presidential election.

On Thursday, the Kremlin announced it would expel 60 American diplomats and close the U.S. consulate in St Petersburg after the United States and European nations announced coordinated expulsions of Russian diplomats.
