North Korea's Kim Jong Un Plans To Denuclearize, Is It For Real?

Another one is that Putin is going to take advantage of the situation and move against Eastern Ukraine. the Iranians will act up and the Chinese - even if they weren't as good as their word toward North Korea - will move on some South China Sea reef or rock or whatever.

North Korea's diplomatic outreach to South Korea and the United States followed an unusually provocative year of weapons tests and has been seen as an attempt, in part, to improve a struggling economy crushed the heavy sanctions those test brought about. "This will also be the message they want to send to the United States - the North obviously believes maintaining its traditional relationship with China would give it stronger influence over the United States".

Christopher Hill, who negotiated with the North as the head of the USA delegation under the George W. Bush administration, believes North Korea needs to demonstrate that it will agree to a verification protocol on denuclearization for diplomatic efforts to advance.

As the leader of a country often called reclusive and unusual, Kim is also much younger than many world leaders, a difference that gets additional resonance in Asia, where respectful deference to elders is widely upheld.

Relations between Beijing and Pyongyang were forged in the blood of the Korean War, when Mao Zedong's forces saved Kim Il-sung from defeat, but China has grown increasingly frustrated with its neighbour's nuclear and missile antics. This meeting was seen as preparation for eventual meetings with the US and South Korea. Pyongyang past year seemingly sought to humiliate Beijing by timing some of its missile tests for major global summits in China.

East Asia expert Gordon Chang, author of Nuclear Showdown, North Korea Takes on the World, says Trump played his cards very well.

When the train finally arrives in Beijing on Monday, Kim and his wife Ri Sol-ju receive a warm welcome from Chinese officials as they step onto a red carpet on the platform.

The two leaders held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The video also shows Xi and Kim exchanging gifts, shaking hands and chatting with their wives.

Global media remain skeptical about whether a Trump-Kim summit will lead to the end of Pyongyang's nuclear program, because the two sides have vastly divergent objectives. China claimed on the same day, after what was supposed to be a secret meeting between Kim Jong Un and Chinese president Xi Jinping, that the North Korean leader has pledged to commit to denuclearization, according to Reuters.

Christopher Green, an analyst at the International Crisis Group, pointed out that Kim's father and predecessor Kim Jong-il travelled to Beijing to meet with the then Chinese leader Jiang Zemin in 2000, ahead of the first inter-Korean summit.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has agreed to meet with Kim, welcomed this week's meeting between Kim and Xi in a tweet saying, "Look forward to our meeting".

The announcement was made after a high-level meeting Thursday between the countries at the border village of Panmunjom. His armored train, a legacy of his plane-phobic father, chugged its way on an unannounced trip to Beijing, marking his first visit to a foreign country as the leader of North Korea.

In footage released earlier by China's state-run TV, a serious-looking Kim is seen taking notes at the meeting. North Korea's provocations also took a toll on relations with Beijing.

North Korea has yet to officially confirm its interest in a summit between Kim and President Donald Trump.

Later Thursday, the North's official Korean Central News Agency for the first time confirmed Mr. Kim's plan to meet with Mr. Moon, without disclosing the time and venue of their meeting.
