  • Brit man first victim of 'SUPER GONORRHOEA' after one-night stand in holiday hotspot

A British man caught a super gonorrhea that is resistant to antibiotics and only realized this after the first choice antibiotics failed. Although he had contact with a woman in Asia, he also had one female partner in the United Kingdom, according to the recent report from Public Health England.

The Public Health England said that it is the very first time that the infection can not be cured with the first choice antibiotics.

Health officials are now tracing any other sexual partners of the man, who has not been identified, in an attempt to contain the infection's spread, the BBC said.

According to the PEH, this is the first report of a patient who is resistant to both types of antibiotics - ceftriaxone and azithromycin - which are typically used to treat the sexually transmitted disease.

"We are investigating a case who has gonorrhoea which was acquired overseas and is very resistant to the recommended first line treatment", Dr Gwenda Hughes, the head of PHE's STI section said.

On a global scale, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that almost 78 million people are infected with gonorrhea each year. The infection founds to get spread from the oral, anal and vaginal sex.

Thailand launched a localised version of the World Health Organization project Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (GASP) in 2015 to help track the emergence and spread of resistance to treatments in gonorrhoea. He is now receiving daily injections of another antibiotic called ertapenem and is scheduled to be tested again by mid-April.

A report by Public Health England went out Thursday and shared the news that a case of an intreatable form of gonorrhea has been discovered.

"Worryingly this has left sexual health services at "tipping point", with clinic closures coming at the worst possible time".

His gonorrhea symptoms reportedly manifested a month after the sexual encounter with the woman.

In the long-term, it can lead to inflammation of the pelvic region in women, and possibly infertility.

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bug that caused super-gonorrhea, fell into the high priority list.

Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies has previously written to Global Positioning System warning that gonorrhoea could become an "untreatable disease" and that antibiotic resistance could take humanity back to the "dark ages".
