Time Magazine Depicts Jeff Sessions As Creepy In Cover

  • Justice Dept. IG looking at allegations of FBI surveillance abuses

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday rebuffed - at least for now - a call from Republican leaders to appoint a second special counsel to look into the FBI's handling of its most high-profile probes and announced that he has asked the us attorney in Utah to spearhead a broad review. But Graham said he still thinks a second special counsel should be appointed "to ensure the investigation is thorough and complete". Check back for updates.

Their requests come as President Trump and his allies have engaged in an anti-FBI campaign in apparent effort to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into his campaign's Russian Federation ties. During the Trump administration's removal of Obama holdover United States attorneys in March 2017, Huber submitted his resignation, but he was reinstated to his job via a temporary appointment by Sessions.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions takes questions during a press conference at the Department of Justice in Washington, DC on February 27, 2018.

On Wednesday, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler of NY, slammed the decision to open a review.

In the letter, Sessions said he wanted U.S. Attorney John Huber to review a variety of issues, including whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation made missteps when it sought a warrant to conduct surveillance on a former adviser to Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign.

Sessions revealed in the letter that he had named US Attorney John W Huber to lead a review of issues previously raised by the lawmakers.

Democrats have said the investigations are a waste of money and time.

Sessions in November managed to deflect from making a decision on whether to formally appoint a special counsel by saying he had directed "senior federal prosecutors" to examine the Clinton-related issues, who would then "make recommendations as to whether any matters not now under investigation should be opened" and "whether any matters merit the appointment of a special counsel".

The U.S. Justice Department has charged a former Minnesota FBI agent with leaking classified information to the online news site The Intercept, Minnesota Public Radio reported on Wednesday. "T$3 he public interest requires the appointment of a special counsel". Included in that inquiry, Mr. Sessions wrote on Thursday, was the surveillance of the campaign official, Carter Page, who served as a foreign policy adviser during Mr. Trump's presidential run.
