The moves are part of broader changes Facebook is planning to bolster privacy, said Rob Sherman, Facebook's deputy privacy officer. The data is not sold to third parties, it said.

"This product enables third-party data providers to offer their targeting directly on Facebook", product marketing director Graham Mudd said in a statement posted online. "It could be very limited or it could be widespread".

In addition to redesigning its settings menu on mobile devices, Facebook said it is creating a new privacy shortcut menu where users would be able to better secure their accounts and control personal information. In the meantime, however, it can take some digging to find how you can change each setting - such as how to disconnect third party apps from your page.

Find, download and delete Facebook data using the Access Your Information option.

"To maintain the trust people place in Facebook when they share information, we are making some updates to the way our platform works".

"We've also cleaned up outdated settings so it's clear what information can and can't be shared with apps", Facebook said in the announcement.

With Facebook under fire over its privacy policies, you might be wondering what type of personal information the social networking giant is keeping on you.

According to Kolochenko, Facebook has shown the impact of a data privacy breach, and this may spur other organisations to seek security researchers' help to avoid the severe sanctions for privacy violations.

The development comes at a time when Facebook is facing heat from all quarters over the leak of personal and other data of some 50 million users to political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook has introduced new privacy tools which are easier to find and give users full control over their data.

Facebook is giving its privacy tools a makeover as it reels from criticisms over its data practices and faces tighter European regulations in the coming months.

Facebook has outlined a set of changes to its platform that impact developers and data brokers. They say that they've been working on this for some time now, but they wanted to "underscore their importance" given the events of the past few days.

Facebook also stated that in the coming weeks they will update their Terms of Service and Data Policy. If Facebook is really just scraping your phone for all the people you've ever had contact with to try and connect you on Facebook (what the company seems to be saying), there's no reason for Facebook to keep granular details of when, from where, and how long you called and texted each person.

Aside from delaying the launch of the Portal smart home device, Facebook is reportedly implementing some changes on how it will store users' data.
