Trump floats possibility of military funding his border wall

  • President Donald Trump reviews border wall prototypes Tuesday

President Trump has long said that Mexico will pay for the border wall - and Mexico has been just as insistent that it will not. The president initially requested $18 billion in funding for the wall.

Trump has also proposed making Mexico pay for the wall indirectly through measures such as increasing visa fees, imposing new tariffs and targeting remittances.

A Washington Post report on Tuesday contained details of Trump's desire for the military to fund his wall and appeared to clarify a message Trump posted to his Twitter account over the weekend, where he exclaimed, "Build a WALL through M!"

He's told his near 50 million followers that now the military has recently got a tidy sum close to three quarters of a billion dollars, that's plenty of spare cash to build that wall.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to weigh in when asked repeatedly on Tuesday at the daily press briefing about trying to get the military to fund the wall. Trump expressed that he made a mistake, against his own instincts, signing the agreement to avoid a government shutdown. For the reallocation of budget, Trump will have to get approval from the Congress - which he is not likely to get.

But Gallego argued it was needed as a pre-emptive measure since Trump could look to Defense Department coffers when he had trouble getting Mexico to pay for the wall, as he promised.

Trump, who told advisers he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers appropriated only $1.6 billion for the border wall, has begun suggesting that the Pentagon could fund the sprawling construction, citing a "national security" risk.

As CNN noted, Trump had already backed away from the idea that Mexico would pay for the border wall, saying instead that the US would initially pay for it and then seek to recoup some of the money through placing tariffs on Mexico or some other form of repayment.

"Certain things are said during the campaign that are uninformed", Kelly reportedly said during the meeting.

Even if the military could theoretically provide the funds, people aren't happy that it's someone other than Mexico forking out the money.

Prior to signing the omnibus spending bill last week, Trump bellyached on Twitter and during a signing event, stating that he would never sign another bill like that again.

An administration official has confirmed using the military budget is one of the ideas to fund the border wall.

Trump first publicly floated the idea of having the Pentagon pay for the rest of construction in an obscure tweet that left many confused.
