Trump Backs OC Against California's 'Illegal And Unconstitutional Sanctuary Policies'

  • Anti-'sanctuary state' movement picks up steam in Orange County

At a packed public hearing, the county's board of supervisors-all Republicans-also voted to support a federal lawsuit against California's so-called sanctuary state law, which strictly limits when and how local authorities can cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

"What it does do is prevent law enforcement from acting as ICE agents, hunting down and rounding up hard-working immigrants in our communities", he said in a statement to The Post.

Inmate information is already publicly available in a database called "Who's in Jail" for Orange County, south of Los Angeles.

ICE spokeswoman Lori Haley wrote in an email late Monday that she would not comment "beyond what the Sheriff has said".

California passed the sanctuary law a year ago to try to protect immigrants from stepped-up deportations under the Trump administration.

He said Tuesday's vote was largely symbolic, and does not directly undercut the state law. The Yorba Linda City Council, for example, agreed to file an amicus brief to a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration against California and immigration-related laws the federal government alleges are unconstitutional.

Los Alamitos, a small city in Orange County, voted last week to oppose California's "sanctuary" law. Now the question of local law being subordinate to state law is being brought to the forefront.

The 4-0 vote from the Republican-controlled Orange County Board of Supervisors follows actions by other Orange County leaders to resist SB 54. "You may intellectually be incapable of understanding that, but it is factually true", Supervisor Shawn Nelson told the crowd during Tuesday's board meeting, drawing boos and groans from the audience.

"We can not have all the states with different immigration laws".

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and legal experts have argued that California's laws are different from Arizona's.

"Anti-immigrant measures may still play in the tiniest parts of Orange County or the reddest parts of the state, but they will eventually founder in the new California", Arellano wrote. "What I'm doing is entirely within the confines of the law and I'm doing what I think is important for my constituents".

A spokesman for California's Democratic Governor Jerry Brown said he was unlikely to react to the move. While the negotiations resulted in several modifications to the bill, Hutchens said the final version still limits communication "in a way that puts the public at risk".

Hutchens has been an outspoken critic of SB 54, which she said "makes local law enforcement's job more hard and requires bureaucratic processes that could allow risky individuals to fall through the cracks of our justice system". "My department, however, remains committed to cooperating fully with federal authorities in all areas where I have discretion to remove serious criminals from our community".
