Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu was briefly hospitalised on Tuesday with a high fever, Israeli media reported.

The leader was also suffering from a "cough", the office said in a statement. Netanyahu was accompanied by his personal physician, Dr. Tzvi Berkowitz, and underwent exams by hospital doctors as well.

An official statement from his office said hospital tests indicated the prime minister was suffering from a mild viral infection of his upper respiratory tract.

Netanyahu was reportedly driven to the hospital in his normal vehicle rather than in an ambulance.

It has been suggested that the Prime Minister has not taken enough rest since falling ill a few weeks ago and has seen his condition worsen in the past days.

The Jerusalem Post reported later that Netanyahu had been released.

"I hope that with the help of God in the coming hours he will recover and return to full functioning soon", said Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman, and wished him a "speedy and complete recovery".

Netanyahu's illness has come at a stressful time for the four-times right-wing prime minister, who is under police investigation for corruption in three different cases.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has been questioned several times since the start of 2017 and is a suspect in two separate cases.
