  • Waymo to create luxury, self-driving electric car with Jaguar

"This year in 2018, starting in Phoenix, Arizona - there members of the public will be able to take these fully self-driving cars anywhere within our service area", Waymo CEO John Krafcik said at a press event in NY.

The announcement comes amid a turbulent time for the self-driving vehicle industry. It has also revealed plans for a self-driving ride-hailing service, unveiled a self-driving minivan, and earlier this month announced it was piloting self-driving cargo trucks for Google's Atlanta datacenters.

It's also significant that the integration of Waymo's sensors and self-driving technology will be built into these I-Paces at the factory in Graz, Austria.

I-Pace models fitted with Waymo's self-driving technology will start testing later this year, gathering data to help JLR's engineers refine the technology with the aim of having 20,000 self-driving Jaguar I-Paces in operation in the first two years.

Waymo has been working on self-driving technology since 2009. The vehicle in use, and the thousands more coming to Waymo, were developed in Novi and manufactured in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. But the company's competitors appear to be surpassing the unconventional electric vehicle company.

Jaguar Land Rover to supply self-driving cars to Google's Waymo

Waymo CEO John Krafcik is billing their newest addition to the fleet as the "world's first premium, electric, self-driving auto", saying that "the vehicle itself we think is graceful, in the long tradition of Jaguar".

Waymo, Google's self-driving vehicle project, has been given a massive premium boost with the announcement that the Jaguar I-Pace is joining its fleet.

At a press conference today in New York, Waymo CEO John Krafcik announced the world's first premium electric self-driving auto.

The partnership between Jaguar - owned by India's Tata Group, along with Land Rover - and Waymo is among the first instances of luxury brands combining with a tech company to push forward autonomous systems. Waymo even boasts that it is the only company that has vehicles on the road with no occupants in the front seats. Its size makes it ideal for city driving. Recently, General Motors announced it would test autonomous vehicles, potentially setting up a showdown with Waymo for driverless taxis. He said the Uber death was very sad "as is the deaths we have every day on the road from human errors and human behaviour".
