  • British sailor John Fisher has been missing in the Southern Ocean for several hours

Volvo Ocean Race organisers have confirmed a British sailor is presumed to be lost at sea after falling overboard in the Southern Ocean. A ship about 400 nautical miles away has been diverted.

Mr Brisius said despite conducting an exhaustive search in challenging conditions, teammates had eventually been forced to turn towards land without him after making the decision that going back to assist during gale force winds was "not a viable option".

"Today, our thoughts and prayers go out to John's family and the entire Scallywag team".

The Volvo Ocean Race is a 83,340km event around the world, with a field of seven boats now contesting Leg 7 from Auckland to Itajai, Brazil.

Volvo Ocean Race organisers acknowledged the severity of the forecast and lack of light meant chances of a rescue were slim.

Commodore of the club Marc Read says Mr Fisher was highly experienced and safety conscious.

President of the Volvo Ocean Race Richard Brisius said Mr Fisher was now thought to have perished in the "extreme" sea conditions present in the area at the time.

We will have more information as it becomes available.

The 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race started from Alicante, Spain, on October 22nd and covers 45,000 nautical miles (83,000 km) around the world, featuring a total of 12 host ports.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with John's family and the crew at this most hard time, and we are working with Volvo Ocean Race to provide all the support we can". Only two days earlier, the yacht had passed Point Nemo, which Yachting World describes as "a theoretical point in the South Pacific which is the most geographically remote place on the planet".

"Skippers in all sorts of boats in any race have got enormous responsibility for the welfare of the people onboard".
