  • Letter: Block President Donald Trump from dislodging Special Counsel Robert Mueller

"I love the president and wish him very well", Dowd told NBC News after the first reports of his resignation surfaced.

The 77-year-old left Trump's legal team days after the hiring of Joseph DiGenova, a cable news commentator and former USA attorney who has claimed the Mueller investigation is an attempt to frame the president, carried out by the FBI and Department of Justice.

The White House and later Mr Dowd had to clarify the statement, saying the president's legal team wasn't calling for Mr Mueller to be fired. Dowd stirred controversy when he said Mueller's investigation should end, comments he later walked back.

Washington lawyer Joseph diGenova will join the legal team this week, according to attorney Jay Sekulow, who also represents Trump.

DiGenova in particular has raised eyebrows for his claims on the Fox News Channel that the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation framed Trump with manufactured evidence in an effort to help Hillary Clinton in 2016. Dowd just wanted Trump to cooperate with the FBI's probe to bring a calm and quick end to this investigation (unless, of course, the President has something to hide), but Trump insists on being hard through every step of the way.

Mr DiGenova has advocated a much more confrontational approach, including the idea for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mr Mueller's work, to be removed and appointed as a judge.

Mr Dowd was handpicked by longtime Trump lawyer Marc Kasowitz over the summer, when it became clear Mr Mueller's investigation could last months, if not years, and questions were raised about whether Mr Trump had obstructed justice. Once you reveal information to a third party (or the whole world), you can't claim privilege over it. Dowd may be able to remain silent regarding private discussions he and Trump had about the tweet, but not when it comes to the tweet itself and claims that he already made himself.

The main disagreement was that Dowd has persistently tried to get Trump to be nice to Mueller and Trump refuses to be nice to Mueller.

Mueller's probe concerns unproven allegations that Trump's campaign colluded with Russians to impact the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

They warned Trump: "Do not meddle in the special counsel investigation".

Dowd reportedly resigned because he doesn't feel Trump is listening to his advice any more.

This is at least the second major reshuffling of Trump's legal team in the previous year.

Dowd confirmed his departure to multiple media outlets.

Two weeks ago Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, including bank fraud and filing false tax returns, none of which relate to Russian Federation or the alleged interference in the United States election.
