Red Bull duo banking on wet qualifying forecast

"I'm happy with the way I drove today and we had a very fast race vehicle", he said after the race.

"I had a lot of issues with the auto, balance problems, and we found out after four or five laps something broke off the vehicle", he claimed.

"I think the first parts of qualifying were okay but at the end we just missed a few tenths, it looked like it was all in the first sector".

"The last lap I had a moment in Turn 13, tried to brake really late but didn't work".

Ferrari teammates Kimi Raikkonen and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top five, the German a deflating half a second slower than Hamilton as the Scuderia's championship charge started with a splutter. "I know it would be nice to be in that position, but for everyone else it sucks!"

"I'd left home and sacrificed a bit, so I wanted to do it properly, with no regrets and take away a lot of memories of the travel".

Ricciardo gave praise to the fans who flocked to the Albert Park circuit throughout the weekend, but he is now looking forward to some down time before turning his attention to the Bahrain Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Ricciardo, along with Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen, opted to complete Q2 on the Supersoft tyres, as opposed to the Ultrasoft compound preferred by their rivals.

He finished runnerup behind Nico Rosberg in the 2014 race, his first for Red Bull, but was disqualified for a technical breach that was no fault of his own.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton completed the podium, finishing second.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said earlier damage to the car's rear diffuser from a corner had probably contributed to a lack of balance before the spin and that Verstappen had done "incredibly well" to manage the problem through the race.

And while he has never won the Australian Grand Prix, Ricciardo has warned those starting in front of him that he intends to take his anger out on the track.

However, Hamilton did not seem fazed by the one-two Ferrari challenge ahead of Sunday's 58-lap race with seemingly no protection from teammate Bottas.

"The stewards also found that Ricciardo slowed by as much as 175km/h from his fast times at Turn 12 and was consistently and significantly slower in the final three turns, indicating that he was fully complying with the requirements of Appendix H of the International Sporting Code".
