Dana Jacobson defends Leonard Hamilton after awkward interview

  • March Madness 2018: Leonard Hamilton's aloof post-game interview sparks criticism

After its last miss, Florida State players chose to not foul and extend the game with 11 seconds remaining. They have defeated a more impressive slate of teams (ACC third-place team Miami, SEC regular-season co-champ Tennessee and Mountain West champ Nevada, a Kansas State team that downed Kentucky) than MI in the tournament.

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton was criticized for his conduct in a postgame interview with Dana Jacobson.

Florida State was an opponent MI hasn't seen too much of, able to play as many as 12 guys in a game. Offensively, the Wolverines made just enough plays to take control. But regardless, it should be noted the Wolverines have done everything correctly this season - win or lose at the Final Four.

Charles Matthews scored 17 points and MI earned its first Final Four berth since 2013 with a 58-54 victory over the Seminoles on Saturday night.

In fact, MI let its fans do the talking: The Wolverines had a distinct home-court advantage from thousands of vocal fans packed into the lower bowl of Staples Center, and they seemed to need all of those cheers to survive an off shooting night.

Yet once again, Jon Beilein's team relied on their defense to keep the Seminoles at bay before their shooting could get into form.

"The combination of the drama and the raw emotion of athletics and the critical analysis of it make for compelling television, but not always for levelheaded interviews with the participants who must immediately manage both", Hamilton said in a statement released by the school. Nobody could have anticipated Michigan's opponent in the Final Four Saturday in San Antonio.

MI coach John Beilein predicted a major advantage for his team, and he was proven correct.

The Wolverines (32-7) have tamped down three consecutive teams with designs on pulling surprises - No. 6 seed Houston, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 9 Florida State. He was nothing but professional w/me throughout this weekend as I believe I was with them.

"They did a good job throughout the whole year", he said of his players.

"I don't really know who she is", Matthews said.

MI had a distinct home-court advantage from thousands of vocal fans packed into the lower bowl of Staples Center. Against Texas A&M, they shot the lights out, scoring 99 points. The crowd included Rudy Tomjanovich, the MI alumnus and former Lakers coach, who watched in Wolverines gear near courtside. The Missouri Valley champions led by as much as 23 points after winning their three previous games by a combined four points.
