  • Policeman killed in Egypt in suspected car bombing ahead of election

The interior ministry says at least 2 people were killed, including a police officer, and 5 others were injured.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior said the attack was an assassination attempt against al-Nemr.

Investigators say a bomb placed underneath the vehicle went off when the security chief drove by, raising speculation that it was targeting the official.

Health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said the casualties were taken to a military hospital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which came two days before Egyptians begin voting in a presidential election and amid a wide-scale security campaign against ISIL militants in the north Sinai Peninsula.

The state news agency Mena quoted Maj Gen Al Nemr as saying that a policeman and a driver were killed.

The bombing comes just days before President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi faces the head of the Ghad Party Moussa Moustafa Moussa in the presidential election.

The Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group, which has declared allegiance to Daesh, has killed hundreds of soldiers, policemen and civilians, mainly in its North Sinai stronghold but also elsewhere in Egypt.

It has also killed scores of members of Egypt's minority Coptic Christian community in church bombings and shootings.

The suspected auto bomb, which also wounded at least four people, targeted the motorcade, the source said.
