"While it's still tragic, he may have saved other people's lives", Gov. Larry Hogan said, according to The Baltimore Sun.

A 14-year-old boy who was shot in the thigh was released Wednesday from a hospital, while the girl, Jaelynn Willey, was still fighting for her life at the University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center.

The sheriff's office also said the girl, Jaelynn Willey, was "gravely" injured and she had a prior relationship with the shooter, confirming this was not a random act of violence. Peterson later resigned but has denied any wrongdoing. Police say the two had been in a relationship that recently ended.

The Florida shooting has also sparked a national conversation about gun violence in schools, with President Donald Trump calling for more armed adults in schools.

Proponents of increased school security immediately embraced Gaskill as a real-world example of what a well-trained "good-guy with a gun" can do when a school is under fire. Maryland State Superintendent Karen Salmon has said more should be done to support and counsel troubled students.

Maryland's Senate joined the House on Monday night to ban bump stocks, which enable a semi-automatic rifle to mimic a fully automatic weapon.

Hogan said "it's outrageous that we haven't taken action yet", with less than three weeks left in the session. Superintendent Stephen Guthrie previously expressed concerns about funding, but the Carroll County Commissioners will pay to place deputies at various schools throughout the county for the rest of the year until a long-term funding plan is established.

National Rifle Association spokeswoman Dana Loesch said the officer's quick response isn't being talked about because it "disrupts the narrative".

St. Mary's County is about a two-hour drive south of Washington, D.C. Threats against schools have proliferated as well, and Great Mills High has not been immune. According to an announcement sent out by the school principal, Jake Heibel, the school resource officer had determined "the threat was not substantiated". Officials said there is surveillance video of the shooting and it is being used in the investigation. "We did sleepovers all the time", he said.

His daughter graduated from Great Mills previous year.

The Enterprise, a local newspaper, reports Cameron said at the time that Gaskill had "used exemplary judgment".

Police investigated rumors that someone was threatening to shoot people at the school last month, BayNet, a Maryland news outlet, reported on February 21. Rollins reportedly had held his handgun to his head in the moment before shots were fired, suggesting that he may have shot himself. The man eventually complied and was placed under arrest, the office said.

The 14-year-old victim was discharged from the hospital Wednesday.

In recent years, the sheriff's office has redefined its response to active-shooter situations.

Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer praised the first responders, saying the officer at the school 'answered the call this morning with swiftness, professionalism, and courage.' He said it's now for Congress to take action.

"It is hard for us not to see her shining, smiling face right now, and to see her light up the room with her presence", Willey's family said in a statement. Officers also are outfitted with first-aid kits and have training in combat medicine. My heart breaks for his family."Ramzziddin was fatally shot when he was off duty and helping a neighbor who had asked for his assistance in a domestic dispute, police have said".

Jaelynn is one of nine siblings, according to a statement from the family, and a member of the swim team.
