  • Canadian model shows heavy snow over the D.C. area Tuesday

A winter storm watch will be in effect from 2 p.m. Tuesday until 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

With temperatures expected to be in the mid-30s much of Tuesday, it may prevent at least some of the snow from sticking, However, there's a much higher chance of Wednesday's wet, heavy snow sticking, he said.

Boston may get as much as 8 inches of snow by the Wednesday afternoon commute, with another 4 coming after sunset, said Bill Simpson, weather service meteorologist in Taunton, Massachusetts.

"Plan on hard travel conditions", the weather service said in a statement.

Precipitation is possible throughout the day on Wednesday.

Those colder temperatures near the ground on Tuesday night will persist into Wednesday and that is why Wednesday's system has a higher potential for the chance of accumulating snowfall.

California has a couple days break in between storm systems.

By the end of the week, we expect a bit of a warming trend with temps well up into the 40's that will make it feel a little closer to spring.

The National Weather Service in Taunton handles weather forecasts for much of Southern New England, including MA counties east of the Berkshires.

Models will come into more agreement later tonight and into tomorrow morning, so we WILL change the snowfall totals several times over the next 18 hours. There's a chance for some light rain or snow toward the evening. A weather system with rain, wintry mix and snow is expected to arrive in the state Tuesday. Midcoast Maine could get 3 to 5 inches, while areas further inland, to the west and north, could get 1 to 3 inches. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Northeast wind around 7 miles per hour.
